JSE-listed Blu Label Unlimited (Blu Label) announced that its subsidiary, BluEnergy Trading, has been granted a multi-year energy trading licence by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). The licence empowers BluEnergy to provide renewable energy solutions across the energy value chain by connecting municipalities, independent power producers (IPPs), and energy users, aiming for a more resilient and cost-effective energy supply for local communities.
BluEnergyโs operations are supported by its partnership with Cigicell, a leading provider of prepaid electricity vending and revenue assurance systems, embedded in over 95 municipalities across nine South African provinces.
Aaron Suckerman, CEO of BluEnergy, said: โThis licence is a critical enabler of BluEnergyโs strategy. It allows us to actively participate in the buying and selling of power. By combining long-term power purchase agreements with proven prepaid revenue collection and settlement infrastructure, we are removing barriers to entry and providing municipalities with a secure, long-term solution for their energy needs.โ
BluEnergy operates through a fully integrated model across the energy value chain, spanning project development, asset ownership, operations and maintenance, and energy procurement and trading. This structure allows the company to manage both technical and commercial aspects of energy delivery, grid integration, wheeling frameworks, and contractual performance, while supporting localized generation and efficient energy flows.
Mark Levy, Co-CEO of Blu Label Unlimited, highlighted the broader significance: โEnergy accessibility is a foundational marker of economic growth and social development. BluEnergyโs ability to act as both offtaker and trader, supported by Blu Labelโs strong balance sheet and fintech capabilities, positions the business to deliver sustainable energy solutions at scale and contribute meaningfully to South Africaโs energy transition and decarbonisation.โ
The regulatory approval also enables BluEnergy to strengthen municipal resilience, financial performance, and service delivery, fostering broader economic growth, infrastructure investment, and community development.
With the licence secured, BluEnergy will now focus on expanding its project pipeline and operationalising trading activities to support South Africaโs transition to a more decentralised and sustainable power system.
