Zelestra, a global renewable energy company specializing in multi-technology solutions, has commenced construction of its second solar plant in Italy. The 9.5 MWdc Bellomo project, located in Modica, marks Zelestra’s first agrivoltaic development in Sicily.
The project is being realized through a collaboration with BKW, under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA). This agreement also covers Zelestra’s recently commissioned 6.5 MWdc Ginosa plant in Puglia.
Bianca Sarbu, Managing Director Trading & Origination at BKW, commented: “The next step in our successful collaboration with Zelestra is now taking place in Sicily. Our long-term renewables agreement provides a strong and stable framework for delivering clean solar power to Modica, supporting the energy transition in Italy and beyond.”
Improving System has been appointed as the EPC contractor for the Bellomo project. Construction is expected to create up to 80 local jobs. Designed as an agrivoltaic system, over 80% of the site will remain in agricultural use, combining sheep grazing, native pastures, and carob tree cultivation alongside tracker-mounted PV systems. The project will be locally managed and monitored annually, promoting soil health, biodiversity, and landscape integration.
Maria Monisteri Caschetto, Mayor of Modica, said: “Initiatives that preserve our territory while building a sustainable future for our community will always find our support. The Bellomo project will maintain agricultural use, generate local jobs, and deliver clean energy. Additionally, solar-powered street lighting at rural intersections will enhance road safety.”
Bellomo is the first Italian project to include Zelestra’s EmPowerS initiative under its 3Es social impact strategy (Education, Energy, Environment). Partnering with the Municipality of Modica, the initiative aims to strengthen local infrastructure and improve safety.
Eliano Russo, Zelestra’s CEO in Italy, added: “Our growth in Italy continues with Bellomo following Ginosa. We remain focused on delivering clean energy on time and budget, supporting skilled local jobs, and fostering rural development. This year, we aim to double our Italian project pipeline, driving sustainable economic growth.”
Italy represents one of Zelestra’s fastest-growing markets. The company plans to double its current 1.4 GW solar and battery storage pipeline in 2026. In December 2025, Zelestra secured contracts for nine projects under Italy’s FER X auctions, enabling up to 168 MW of new solar capacity.
