The Autorité de Régulation de l’Électricité (ARE) has granted regulatory approval to GREEN WORLD ENERGIE SARL for the development and operation of an 8 MW solar power plant with battery storage to supply electricity to the Kamoa-Kakula region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The project, structured as an independent power producer (IPP) initiative, marks a significant step in expanding private sector participation in the country’s regulated electricity market. The approval allows GREEN WORLD ENERGIE SARL to generate and supply renewable energy under a formal license issued by ARE, reinforcing regulatory backing for clean energy investments.
The solar facility, equipped with battery energy storage, is expected to enhance energy security and reliability in the Kamoa-Kakula mining region—one of the country’s key industrial hubs. By diversifying the local energy mix and reducing reliance on conventional power sources, the project is positioned to support industrial competitiveness while contributing to emissions reduction efforts.
The initiative is being viewed as a concrete example of market-driven, sustainable infrastructure investment in the DRC. It demonstrates the viability of revenue-generating, impact-oriented energy projects under clear regulatory frameworks, providing greater certainty for investors operating in critical sectors such as electricity.
The project also aligns with broader national development priorities, including clean energy expansion, climate action, and sustainable economic transformation. By strengthening cooperation between regulators and private sector actors, the development underscores the importance of institutional support in enabling long-term sustainable infrastructure growth.
Industry observers note that such projects can play a pivotal role in advancing the DRC’s sustainable development commitments, particularly in affordable clean energy, industry innovation, and responsible production, while helping to build confidence in the country’s evolving impact investment landscape.
