ACCIONA Energía has completed the installation of a new on-site solar power system for GrafTech at its production facility in Ororbia, located in the region of Navarra. GrafTech is a global leader in graphite materials manufacturing, and this project marks an important step in strengthening its long-term sustainability goals. T

he solar system began operating in mid-February and has a total capacity of 1.56 MWp. It is expected to generate around 2 GWh of renewable electricity every year. Because the production facility has a high and consistent energy demand, the system has been designed for complete on-site use. None of the electricity will be fed back into the grid, allowing the facility to directly consume all the clean energy it produces.

Both companies have entered into a 15-year on-site power purchase agreement structured under an “energy-as-a-service” model. Through this arrangement, GrafTech secures a stable, long-term supply of renewable electricity without having to make an initial financial investment. ACCIONA Energía covers the installation, operation and maintenance of the solar system. This model helps GrafTech reduce emissions and optimise energy costs while avoiding upfront capital expenditure. The photovoltaic installation spans approximately 11,500 square metres across the facility. Panels have been mounted on the roofs of industrial buildings as well as on parking canopies.

The system uses more than 2,300 high-efficiency bifacial modules, which are capable of generating electricity from both sides, helping improve overall performance. These modules have been arranged across several types of mounting structures to make full use of the available space. As part of the project, ACCIONA Energía has also replaced a section of fiber cement roofing with corrugated metal sheeting. This upgrade supports GrafTech’s ongoing plan to gradually remove fiber cement materials from its facilities, improving workplace safety and aligning with modern industrial standards.

For GrafTech, this installation strengthens its wider sustainability strategy. The company has been steadily working toward lowering emissions, improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable electricity in its operations. By integrating on-site solar generation, the company moves closer to decarbonising its production processes and contributing to a more responsible industrial supply chain. At the same time, the project highlights ACCIONA Energía’s growing role as a key partner in industrial decarbonisation. By supporting companies like GrafTech, it reinforces its leadership in delivering clean energy solutions tailored to the needs of energy-intensive industries.
