China Connects World’s Largest AI-Powered Energy Storage Station to Grid

China has successfully connected the Jingyi Chagan Hada Energy Storage Power Station to the grid in Inner Mongolia, marking the commissioning of the world’s largest AI-powered single-site electrochemical energy storage facility. The project, developed by Envision Energy, has a total installed capacity of 4 GWh, representing a significant milestone in large-scale battery storage deployment.

The energy storage station forms part of a broader 12.8 GWh energy storage cluster deployed across several locations in Inner Mongolia, including Bayannur, Ordos, Hohhot, Ulanqab, Xilingol League, and Alxa League. The cluster is designed to enhance grid flexibility and support the integration of large volumes of renewable energy generated in the region.

Before commissioning, the project underwent rigorous grid verification tests, including “three charge and three discharge” cycles and a 72-hour continuous trial operation at rated power. The successful completion of these tests demonstrates the system’s reliability and makes it the largest energy storage project in China to complete such verification procedures in a single commissioning phase.

The facility deploys an AI-enabled energy storage system capable of operating in both grid-forming and grid-following modes, allowing it to rapidly synchronise with the grid and provide enhanced system stability. These capabilities enable the project to respond more efficiently to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.

The grid connection coincides with China’s broader efforts to strengthen power system flexibility and accelerate renewable energy integration, as outlined in recent policy guidance issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.
