The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) has started the process of selecting a consulting firm to prepare a regional strategy for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This effort is being supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through its Fund for African Private Sector Assistance. The move is seen as an important step toward improving and modernizing the electricity systems across Southern Africa.
As more countries in the region adopt renewable energy sources like solar and wind, the need for reliable energy storage has become more urgent. Renewable energy is not always available, as it depends on weather conditions such as sunlight and wind speed. This creates challenges for maintaining a stable power supply. Battery storage systems can help solve this issue by storing extra electricity when production is high and releasing it when supply is low or demand increases.
Under this initiative, the selected consulting firm will develop a clear plan to integrate battery storage into the regional power grid. The work will include identifying pilot projects, reviewing existing regulations across member countries, and creating an investment strategy to attract private sector funding. The project will also focus on building local capacity by designing training programs for engineers and utility staff so they can operate and maintain these advanced systems.
The Southern African Power Pool, based in Harare, Zimbabwe, plays a key role in coordinating electricity trading among 12 member countries, including South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique. By creating a unified strategy for battery storage, SAPP aims to improve power reliability across the region and reduce electricity costs for consumers. This initiative also supports efforts to lower carbon emissions and meet the growing energy needs of industries and communities.
Both international and local consulting firms with experience in energy storage and power systems have been invited to submit their proposals. This project reflects a broader trend in Africa, where countries are working together to address shared infrastructure challenges through regional cooperation.
With support from the AfDB, this strategy is expected to strengthen the regionโs energy systems and support the transition toward cleaner energy sources. By investing in battery storage now, Southern Africa is preparing for a future where renewable energy plays a larger role, while ensuring a stable and reliable power supply for millions of people.
