Hindustan Power has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for its proposed 2×800 MW transitional power project at Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh, marking a major milestone in the expansion of its power generation portfolio.
The approval clears the way for the second phase of the Anuppur power plant project, enabling the company to move into the next stage of development, including detailed engineering and execution planning, subject to further regulatory approvals.
The proposed 1,600 MW Phase II expansion builds on the company’s existing 1,200 MW Anuppur thermal power project, which was commissioned in two phases between 2015 and 2016. The existing facility has contributed significantly to strengthening regional power infrastructure and supporting long-term generation capacity.
Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, said the environmental clearance marks an important step forward for the company’s expansion strategy and capacity growth plans.
Puri stated that the Anuppur project forms a significant part of the company’s energy portfolio, and the focus now will be on ensuring the timely execution and completion of the second phase, which is expected to substantially enhance Hindustan Power’s total installed capacity.
He added that the Anuppur expansion reflects the company’s continued commitment to supporting India’s growing power demand, strengthening energy infrastructure, and contributing to economic growth through reliable transitional energy solutions.
Puri further noted that transitional power projects continue to play a critical role in ensuring supply stability, meeting rising electricity demand, and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security, particularly during the ongoing energy transition.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining grid stability as renewable energy penetration increases, stating that advanced thermal power projects with strong environmental compliance will remain an important part of India’s evolving energy mix to address intermittency challenges associated with renewable power.
Hindustan Power entered India’s thermal energy sector in 2008 and established its presence with the development of the 1,200 MW coal-based Anuppur power plant. With the Phase II expansion now progressing, the company is set to further strengthen its position in India’s power generation sector while supporting the country’s broader energy security objectives.
