Ameren Missouri is encouraging customers to take advantage of the various energy assistance programs available to help manage utility costs, especially as seasonal demands rise. The company is also urging households to apply for Missouriโs Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), even if their bills are not yet past due.
While Ameren Missouriโs own support programs operate year-round, the application deadline for LIHEAPโs annual Energy Assistance (EA) program and the Winter Emergency Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP) is approaching on May 31, as administered by the Missouri Department of Social Services.
To ensure customers can access these resources, Ameren Missouri works closely with local community action agencies, including the Community Action Agency of St. Louis County (CAASTLC), to help individuals navigate applications for LIHEAP and other assistance options.Reflecting on the importance of these programs, Linda Huntspon, CEO of CAASTLC, emphasized that energy assistance goes beyond financial support, offering families a sense of stability and reassurance.
She noted that as Community Action Month is observed in May, residents are encouraged to seek guidance early and explore available LIHEAP and Ameren Missouri programs before funding deadlines pass. Huntspon underscored that families unsure of their eligibility should still reach out, as no household should face energy insecurity without support.Under LIHEAPโs Energy Assistance program, qualifying households can receive a one-time payment toward either heating or cooling expenses.
For those experiencing more urgent financial hardship, additional help is available through ECIP, with the winter program running through May 31 and the summer program operating from June 1 to September 30. While ECIP requires a disconnection notice, this is not necessary for the general EA program. Joe Solari, Ameren Missouriโs vice president of customer experience, noted that financial challenges can affect anyone and highlighted the companyโs ongoing partnerships with hundreds of community agencies to ensure customers have access to a wide range of support options.
Ameren Missouri provides several programs to help customers manage their bills. Keeping Cool offers up to five monthly bill credits during the summer months for qualifying residents, including seniors, households with young children, and individuals with medical conditions or disabilities. The Dollar More program provides up to $600 annually for customers with past-due balances, and also enables community members to contribute funds to assist others.
Through the New Start Energy Relief program, unhoused electric customers can receive help transitioning back to permanent housing and reconnecting service. Additional support is available for active-duty military, veterans and their families through the Veterans Energy Assistance program, which provides up to $600 for overdue bills.
The company also supports home weatherization initiatives, helping eligible homeowners and renters lower energy costs through improvements such as insulation and sealing. Customers can explore flexible payment arrangements and other bill-management tools directly with Ameren Missouri. For individuals facing medical challenges, Ameren Missouri offers several specialized assistance options.
These include Critical Medical Needs, developed in partnership with 211 to address electric, gas, and sewer bills, as well as programs such as the Medical Equipment Registry, Caring Contact, and Medical Hardship extensions, all designed to support households with heightened medical vulnerabilities. Customers can learn more about these programs and additional assistance resources on Amerenโs website.
