Gujarat Deploys 870 MW Battery Storage Network to Support Renewable Energy

Gujarat has strengthened its renewable energy infrastructure by commissioning an 870 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) network aimed at improving grid reliability and supporting large-scale clean energy integration. The battery backup network has been deployed across five locations in the state, including Modhera, Lakhpat in Kutch, and Charal near Ahmedabad.

The initiative is part of Gujarat’s broader strategy to address the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Battery storage systems help store excess electricity generated during periods of high renewable output and release it during peak demand hours, ensuring stable power supply and reducing pressure on the grid.

The state government has also identified and approved 13 additional BESS projects across districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan, and Kutch. These projects are expected to further enhance Gujarat’s ability to manage rising renewable energy capacity efficiently.

Officials said the deployment supports Gujarat’s long-term clean energy ambitions and aligns with India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. The storage facilities are strategically being installed close to renewable energy generation hubs to minimise transmission losses and improve power management.

Gujarat has emerged as one of India’s leading renewable energy states, driven by rapid expansion in solar and wind installations, including the massive Khavda renewable energy park in Kutch. The new battery storage network is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability as renewable energy penetration continues to rise across the state.
