Egypt is preparing to launch a major green energy initiative called the “Industry Sun” program to expand rooftop solar power across the country’s industrial sector. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the project before it is officially presented to the Cabinet for final approval. The initiative is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to increase clean energy use, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, and ease pressure on the national electricity grid and natural gas resources.

The program aims to generate nearly 1,000 megawatts of solar power by installing rooftop solar systems on factories across Egypt. According to Industry Minister Khaled Hashem, the project will require around 7 million square meters of rooftop space and is expected to involve nearly 7,000 factories. This represents almost 10 percent of Egypt’s registered industrial base. Officials stated that the average solar installation for participating factories will be around 150 kilowatts, although system sizes will vary depending on the size of the factory and its electricity consumption needs.

Large industrial facilities with extensive rooftop space and high daytime energy use are expected to install bigger solar systems, while smaller factories and medium-scale industries will receive customized installations suited to their operations. The government believes the initiative will especially support small and medium-sized enterprises by lowering electricity costs and reducing operational expenses during peak daytime hours.

The Industry Sun program is also expected to improve the competitiveness of Egyptian products in international markets. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean manufacturing practices, the initiative will help Egyptian exporters meet growing global sustainability standards. Officials believe this step will strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional center for green transition and environmentally friendly industrial supply chains.

During the meeting, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat highlighted the significant economic and environmental benefits expected from the project, particularly in reducing conventional fuel consumption. Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk confirmed that the government has already finalized the initial financial estimates and is coordinating with funding institutions to support the rapid implementation of the initiative.

Investment Minister Mohamed Farid also proposed expanding the project to include factories located in free zones and investment zones. Prime Minister Madbouly instructed officials to complete the final framework quickly to ensure the smooth launch of the ambitious solar program.
