Sungrow and Malaysian solar engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company ERS Energy have reached a combined 1 GWh energy storage project milestone across Malaysia and the Philippines.
The milestone was marked during a signing ceremony and reflects the companies’ expanding collaboration on energy storage projects aimed at supporting grid stability and renewable energy integration in Southeast Asia.
In Malaysia, the companies are working on the 441 MWh MyBeST project in Bahau. The four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project is being executed with ERS Energy as the EPC contractor and forms part of Malaysia’s national large-scale battery energy storage initiative led by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga).
The project is expected to support grid flexibility by storing electricity during periods of high supply and dispatching it when required. The BESS is also expected to facilitate greater integration of variable renewable generation, including solar power, while supporting the overall reliability of Malaysia’s power system.
In the Philippines, Sungrow and ERS Energy are collaborating on a 556 MWh, four-hour BESS project for ACEN, with ERS Energy serving as the EPC contractor.
The project incorporates grid-forming capabilities, enabling the battery system to provide support for grid voltage and frequency. It is also expected to participate in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), allowing stored electricity to be dispatched based on prevailing market conditions.
According to the companies, the two projects demonstrate the application of energy storage technologies to address different power system requirements across Southeast Asian markets. While the Malaysia project focuses on grid flexibility and renewable energy integration, the Philippines project combines energy storage with market participation and grid-forming functionality.
Michael Ruan, Southeast Asia Director at Sungrow, said that energy storage will play an important role in providing the flexibility and resilience required to support the region’s growing renewable energy deployment.
Sungrow said it will continue working with partners across Southeast Asia to deploy energy storage solutions aimed at strengthening grids, increasing renewable energy integration, and supporting the development of more resilient power systems.
