The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has invited members of the public and stakeholders from the energy sector to participate in upcoming public hearings on the draft Wholesale Price Methodology. The initiative forms part of the regulator’s ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and public participation in the development of South Africa’s electricity market regulations.
According to NERSA, the draft methodology is an important framework that will guide how wholesale electricity prices are determined and regulated in the country. The pricing structure is expected to influence the broader electricity value chain, including power generation companies, distributors, traders, and end consumers. Through the consultation process, the regulator aims to develop a balanced pricing model that supports the sustainability of the electricity sector while also protecting consumer interests.
The public hearings will provide an official platform for stakeholders, industry representatives, experts, and citizens to share their opinions, concerns, and recommendations regarding the proposed framework. Participants will also have the opportunity to make oral submissions directly to the regulator during the hearings. NERSA stated that the consultation process is intended to ensure that different viewpoints are taken into account before the methodology is finalized and implemented.
In addition to the hearings, NERSA is also accepting written comments from interested parties who may not be able to attend the sessions in person. The regulator emphasized that written submissions will be considered as part of the overall consultation process. To facilitate proper coordination, all individuals and organizations wishing to attend the hearings or make oral presentations are required to register in advance through the official communication channels provided by NERSA.
The regulator has encouraged stakeholders to carefully review the consultation documents available on its official website before preparing their submissions. NERSA believes that active public participation in the process will contribute to the development of a fair, competitive, and economically viable wholesale electricity pricing framework for South Africa’s evolving energy sector.
