Fortescue is accelerating the decarbonisation of its mining operations in Western Australiaโs Pilbara region through the expansion of solar power and battery energy storage infrastructure as part of its broader โReal Zeroโ emissions strategy.
The company is adding new renewable energy and storage capacity to reduce fossil fuel dependence across its iron ore mining operations and transition towards fully electrified industrial systems.
As part of the initiative, Fortescue is developing the 690 MW Turner River Solar Farm alongside a 650 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Cloudbreak. The projects form part of the companyโs larger Pilbara Energy Connect and Green Grid infrastructure programs aimed at supplying continuous renewable power to mining, rail, port, and ore processing operations.
The companyโs long-term renewable energy network is expected to include approximately 1.2 GW of solar generation, over 600 MW of wind capacity, up to 5 GWh of battery storage, and more than 620 kilometres of transmission infrastructure across the Pilbara region.
Fortescue has stated that the integrated renewable network is designed to provide 24/7 dispatchable electricity for remote mining operations that have traditionally depended heavily on diesel and gas-fired power systems.
The company is also expanding battery deployment across multiple operational sites. Existing projects include a 250 MWh BESS at North Star Junction and a 120 MWh storage system at Eliwana, with additional battery installations planned under future development phases.
Beyond emissions reduction, Fortescue aims to improve operational efficiency, strengthen energy security, and reduce exposure to fossil fuel price volatility through renewable-powered mining infrastructure.
The strategy aligns with the companyโs โReal Zeroโ target, which focuses on eliminating fossil fuel use from Australian iron ore operations by 2030 without relying on carbon offsets.
The renewable energy expansion also highlights a broader industry shift as global mining companies increasingly adopt large-scale solar, wind, and storage technologies to decarbonise energy-intensive operations in remote regions.
Fortescue is additionally integrating advanced technologies such as AI-driven energy optimisation systems, electrified mining equipment, and intelligent battery management software into its clean energy transition program.
Industry observers view the companyโs Pilbara renewable energy network as a potential global benchmark for industrial decarbonisation and large-scale off-grid renewable energy deployment in the mining sector.
