The Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj has launched a special initiative to promote environmental protection and energy conservation by encouraging residents to install rooftop solar systems. The move aims to increase the use of renewable energy while helping citizens reduce their electricity expenses and contribute to a cleaner environment.
As part of the campaign, the corporation will organize awareness and registration camps in different municipal wards across the city. These camps will provide information about rooftop solar installations and help residents avail themselves of the benefits offered under various central and state government schemes. The initiative is expected to make the process of adopting solar energy easier and more accessible for the public.
To attract greater participation, the Municipal Corporation has announced a 10% rebate on house tax for homeowners who install solar panels on their rooftops. According to Prayagraj Mayor Ganesh Kesarwani, residents who wish to claim the rebate must submit the required documents at their respective zonal offices. After the application is received, officials will conduct a physical inspection of the property to verify the installation. Once the verification process is completed successfully, the homeowner will be granted a 10% exemption on property tax.
The initiative also highlights the financial support available under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The cost of installing a rooftop solar system depends on the service provider, but the average installation cost is estimated at around ₹60,000 per kilowatt. A 2 kW solar system typically costs about ₹1.20 lakh, while eligible consumers can receive a government subsidy of ₹90,000. Similarly, a 3 kW rooftop solar system costs around ₹1.80 lakh, with a subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh available under the scheme.
Through the planned awareness camps, the administration hopes to increase public participation in renewable energy adoption. Residents can benefit from lower monthly electricity bills and a reduction in annual house tax. The Municipal Corporation is encouraging citizens to take advantage of the available subsidies and incentives while supporting the city’s efforts toward sustainable development and a greener future.
