KERC Extends Standby Meter Installation Deadline For Open Access Generators To December 2026 In Karnataka

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has extended the deadline for installing standby meters for all open access power generators in the state. According to an official order issued from Bengaluru on June 24, 2026, generators will now have until December 31, 2026, to complete the installation process.

The decision provides significant relief to open access generators that were facing the earlier compliance deadline of June 30, 2026. The previous deadline had been fixed by the Commission through its earlier order in O.P. No. 31/2025. However, after reviewing the matter further under O.P. No. 12/2026, the Commission decided that additional time was required to allow generators to complete the necessary arrangements.

The extension grants an extra six months for generators to install and operationalize standby meters. These meters are considered important for ensuring accurate monitoring, metering, and compliance with power distribution and regulatory requirements within the state.

The order was approved by a three-member bench of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission. The panel was led by Chairman Sri P. Ravi Kumar and included Member (Legal) Sri H.K. Jagadeesh and Member Jawaid Akhtar. The official document was issued under reference number NO. KERC/S/CON/F-40/2180 and was formally promulgated on June 24, 2026.

With the revised timeline now in place, open access generators across Karnataka have been given additional flexibility to complete the infrastructure upgrades without facing immediate regulatory action. The Commission’s decision is expected to help generators address technical, operational, and logistical challenges associated with the installation process.

The extension also reflects the regulator’s effort to ensure smooth implementation of the standby metering requirement while maintaining compliance standards in the electricity sector. Generators are now expected to utilize the extended period to complete installations and ensure full adherence to the regulatory framework before the new deadline at the end of December 2026.
