Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) has emerged as the successful bidder for two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects with a combined capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh in West Bengal. The projects, located at Jeerat and Kharagpur, were awarded by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) through an e-reverse auction under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism.
The projects involve the supply and commissioning of BESS assets worth approximately INR 400 crore. They will be developed under a 15-year Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model with WBSEDCL, providing long-term revenue visibility for the company. Execution and operations will be handled by JEM Energy, a subsidiary of JWL.
Following the latest wins, JEM Energy’s BESS order book has expanded to more than 500 MWh, with a value exceeding INR 500 crore. The order book includes both utility-scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) energy storage projects. The company is targeting a BESS order book of around INR 1,000 crore by FY27, reflecting its expectations of strong growth in India’s energy storage market.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, said the successful bids represent an important milestone in developing a scalable energy storage business. He highlighted the rapid expansion of the company’s order book and reiterated its focus on providing reliable and technology-driven energy storage solutions as India moves towards a renewable-led power system.
The BESS expansion is part of JWL’s strategy to diversify beyond its traditional railway and mobility manufacturing operations. The company supplies freight wagons, locomotives and commercial vehicle components to customers including Indian Railways, the Ministry of Defence and international clients.
Through JEM Energy, JWL is also strengthening its presence in electric vehicles, commercial mobility and advanced energy storage. The latest projects position the group to participate in India’s growing requirement for grid-scale storage as renewable energy capacity continues to increase.
