The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NIRL NCRTC Renewables Limited (NNRL) for the development of a 110 MW captive solar power plant aimed at meeting a significant share of the electricity requirements of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.
The agreement was signed in the presence of NCRTC Managing Director Shri Shalabh Goel, NIRL Director Finance and CMD Designate Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya, NCRTC Director Finance Smt. Namita Mehrotra, Director Electricals & Rolling Stock Shri Mahendra Kumar, along with senior officials from NCRTC and NLC India Renewables Ltd. (NIRL).
The proposed captive solar project is expected to set a new benchmark for integrating renewable energy into mass urban transit systems. Once operational, the plant is projected to meet nearly 60% of the electricity requirement of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.
With an estimated investment of around ₹450 crore, the solar plant will be developed in Jaulan, Uttar Pradesh, using an 80:20 debt-equity funding model. The project is scheduled for commissioning within the next 24 months.
The renewable energy initiative is also expected to deliver significant financial and environmental benefits. NCRTC estimates that the project could help reduce annual electricity expenditure by around 25% while cutting approximately 1.77 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.
The project marks a significant step toward increasing the use of renewable energy in India’s urban transportation infrastructure and supporting the transition toward more sustainable mass transit.
