OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, has invested approximately €115 million to modernize the electrical infrastructure of its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania.
The investment forms part of the refinery’s broader modernization and transformation program and is intended to strengthen its electrical infrastructure for current operations as well as new production capacities under development.
The project included the construction of a high-voltage power line directly connected to the Transelectrica substation, a new-generation electrical substation, and a power distribution substation.
The upgraded infrastructure incorporates Blue GIS technology, a modern electrical switching system designed to have a low environmental impact.
According to Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing, the investment will support the refinery’s existing operations and upcoming projects, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (HVO), and green hydrogen production.
Petrobrazi currently operates its own power generation unit, which supplies nearly all of the refinery’s electricity requirements. In addition, a 7 MW photovoltaic power project is under construction at the refinery.
The new electrical infrastructure is expected to create the conditions required to integrate major projects currently being implemented at Petrobrazi, including the SAF and HVO production unit and planned green hydrogen production capacities.
Petrobrazi refinery plays an important role in supplying the Romanian market with fuels and other petroleum products.
