Websol Energy System Limited has received a land allotment of approximately 54.20 acres from the Government of West Bengal at Falta Industrial Park in Kolkata for the development of a new greenfield solar manufacturing facility.
The proposed facility will have 4 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 4 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity. The project is planned to be developed in two phases of 2 GW each.
The land allotment follows Websol’s assessment of locations near its existing manufacturing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone. The company said that expanding within West Bengal will enable it to leverage more than three decades of operating experience in the state, along with an established skilled workforce, supplier network and local industrial ecosystem.
The proposed facility is expected to create a larger integrated solar manufacturing base for Websol in eastern India, as domestic solar manufacturing capacity continues to expand in line with India’s renewable energy requirements.
Commenting on the development, Sohan Lal Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Websol Energy System Ltd, said the land allotment marks the next phase of the company’s solar manufacturing journey, which began in West Bengal in the mid-1990s. He added that the project will enable Websol to expand manufacturing at a larger scale while continuing to operate within an ecosystem and workforce familiar to the company.
Sanjana Khaitan, Executive Director, Websol Energy System Ltd, said the company’s focus will now shift towards execution, including construction, commissioning and utilisation of the facility. She added that Websol intends to focus on converting its planned manufacturing capacity into production, deliveries and revenue as it works towards its 2028 targets.
The new facility will further strengthen Websol’s manufacturing footprint in West Bengal and contribute to the expansion of India’s domestic solar cell and module manufacturing capacity.
