Mr. Anil Bhasin, President Lighting & Solar

Havells is a well-renowned company in India. Would you please let us know how the journey is has been so far in the solar industry?

Havells ventured in to Solar as a business vertical in May 2016 for supply of complete Solar solutions for residential, commercial and industrial segments. We already had been a key component supplier to the Solar industry since the past few years through our Cables and Switchgear divisions. Today. we are present in the rapidly growing Roof Top Solar PV segment along with the Solar off-grid solutions for power deficient areas. We also have a very well developed range of Solar Streetlights and Landscape Lighting solutions which too are a high growth segment today.

We are very satisfied with the progress made in the last three years and have been able to create a good footprint for the solar business at a national level. We aim to expand this reach in a more penetrative manner to reach more users and resellers in the coming years.

Adopting the philosophy – “HAVELLS ASSURANCE & PEACE OF MIND” has been a great growth driver and catalyst which has really helped us gain wider acceptance in a short time span. Our customers are greatly reassured that they get a complete HAVELLS Solar package from our authorized Solar channel partners comprising all critical components such as PV Modules, Inverters, DC & AC electrical panels, etc. From a customer’s perspective this is significant in view of the long service life of 25 years offered for solar plants and a big relief in an industry which otherwise is driven by local integrators supplying systems comprising critical components of multiple brands. Contacting just a single agency for their servicing needs instead of the harassment of multiple ones is of great comfort to the customer along with the knowledge that HAVELLS will be around for the next 25 years of warranty.

We have further enhanced the HAVELLS value proposition and customer experience by developing a strong back-end design engineering team located out of our HO at Noida and in Hyderabad to support and provide quick and sound technical assistance to specifiers, system integrators and end customers. This service which includes varied services such as site surveys, capacity estimation, array layouts, electrical wiring and interconnection details, structural requirements and BOM along with cost estimation has been greatly appreciated by all stakeholders in the value chain. It helps the customer get the most optimized techno-commercial solution addressing the customer’s key needs resulting in overall savings in cost and combined with the use of the right system components ensures a long trouble free system life.

We have also groomed a dedicated after sales operations and service team which provides guidance and support for on-site commissioning and trouble shooting. The team also gives guidance on proper O&M procedures of the solar plant to get maximum yield through the service life. For the ease of the end user advise is also provided to help identify a trained local service provider for the same.

BTI (Bridge to India) data also placed us within the top 20 roof top players in March 2019. We are confident that by March 2020 we will be amongst the top 10 roof top players in India. Moreover we have seen a rapidly growing demand for our “HAVELLS ENVIRO GTi” Grid-tie String Inverter series ( 1.1kW to 60KW) by both medium and larger EPC companies since we launched the same in March this year. We hope to be a leading player in this segment as well in the coming years and are investing in newer and more efficient technologies in this segment.Keeping in sync with the HAVELLS growth and expansion strategy, our journey thus far in the Solar industry has motivated us to look beyond the Indian shores and explore other emerging and high potential markets as we go forward.

Technology trends in the solar inverter market are changing with time. Kindly brief us about your current strategies for the Indian market?

Aware of the changing trends and evolving technologies in Solar Inverters, especially Grid-tie Inverters, we entered the Solar industry with a very different proposition of Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) in Jan. 2017. We were amongst the pioneers in India to aggressively promote this cutting edge technology especially in the Solar Roof Top market segment. Though it has been a challenging journey in a market which is totally driven by cost (INR/Wp), we are proud of the strides we have made in propagating  this technology albeit it being slightly more expensive. We got good acceptance with the discerning customer who looked for higher yields, trouble free service life and long service warranty (12 to 25 years) of the Inverter and have gone on to deploy almost 70MW of this technology thus far and anticipate a faster rate of deployment going forward.

It is our strong belief that the trend of moving to MLPE technology being witnessed in the more developed markets such as US, Europe & Japan will also catch up in India where customers will realise that the advantages and benefits of this technology through its service life of 25 years far outweigh the marginal increase in initial investment. Over and above the benefits of the modularity offered by this technology to customers across segments is unique and helps a customer to progressively scale up their installation based on their actual need or financial comfort. We are working to introduce more advanced technologies MLPE going forward and have committed considerable resources and manpower towards this endeavor.

The market is also evolving for Hybrid Inverters and this month we have introduced our 3kW & 5kW single phase Hybrid Inverters to augment this segment. The concept of “Peak Hour Power Shaving” will slowly begin to gain momentum in Indian market as it has in the western markets where peak hour tariffs, which are usually 2 to 2.5 times the regular tariff, have been introduced necessitating the need for energy storage. This technology coupled with long life Lithium batteries will be a sought after solution in the coming years. We also plan to introduce the three phase range of Hybrid Inverters for Residential and medium Commercial customers early next year.

What are the milestones which you wish to achieve this fiscal year?

Some of the key milestones targeted this year by HAVELLS are –

  • To be among the top 10 Roof Top players in India
  • To be a major grid-tie inverter supplier in Indian market
  • Expand our channel partner network both quantitatively and geographically
  • Develop and grown our team to address a larger customer base and increase market share
  • Significantly enhance the HAVELLS Solar brand equity through more intense promotional events and programs
