The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has laid out a roadmap to fully switch to renewable energy by 2025, NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay said.
As per the approved plan, NDMC will purchase 142 MW of electricity from non-carbon-based power generation sources and add 100 MW of solar-based power next year. Currently, NDMC areas use around 450 MW of power. Out of which 10 MW is through various rooftop solar power installations.
“We have decided that we will procure only green energy and phased upgradation of our power purchase has been finalized. There will be no carbon dioxide emission due to power consumption by NDMC by 2025,” added Upadhyay.
Council member Kuljeet Chahal said the green energy component will be increased to 32% this year, 65% by 2023, 83% by 2024 and 100% by 2025.
Chahal said, “NDMC has set an ambitious target of shifting to a 100% renewable energy, thus becoming first municipal body in the country to do so. NDMC has decided to not renew its power purchase agreement with thermal power generating stations after its expiry. Simultaneously, NDMC is taking up fresh purchase agreements with only renewable power providers, including Hydro and solar energy,” he explained.
Renewable power will bring down the tariffs. “the landing cost will be around Rs.5.03 KWh for hydro and Rs. 2.44 for solar energy. However the final rates will be firmed up by the regulatory authority,” said Upadhyay.
