LONGi Secures 300 MWh Solar-Plus-Storage Project with RWE to Support Italy’s Grid Modernisation

LONGi has signed an agreement with RWE to supply a utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Italy, marking a significant expansion of the company’s integrated solar-plus-storage business in Europe.

The project will deploy approximately 300 MWh of battery energy storage capacity and is designed to support Italy’s electricity grid by providing peak shaving and ancillary services. The agreement also strengthens LONGi’s position as a provider of integrated clean energy solutions combining solar generation and energy storage.

As part of the project, LONGi will supply its LONGiBank 2.0 6.25 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system. The liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate (LFP) solution delivers 6,251 kWh of storage capacity in a 20-foot container and is designed to offer high energy density, advanced safety features, and improved operational efficiency.

According to the company, the storage system incorporates a multi-level electrical protection design, AI-based thermal runaway prediction, intelligent temperature management, and real-time battery health diagnostics to enhance safety, extend system life, and optimize operations and maintenance (O&M).

Configured as a four-hour energy storage system, the installation is expected to support the Italian national grid by improving renewable energy integration and ensuring electricity availability during periods of high demand when solar generation is limited.

The project aligns with Italy’s National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC), which identifies energy storage as a critical enabler for integrating renewable energy and strengthening grid stability.

Leon Zhang, President of LONGi Europe, said the agreement reflects growing confidence in the company’s integrated solar-plus-storage strategy and demonstrates the increasing role of combined PV and battery storage systems in supporting Europe’s energy transition.

The agreement is based on LONGi’s recently launched LONGi ONE strategy, which integrates photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage, software controls, and lifecycle operations under a single platform. The company said the approach is intended to improve system performance while simplifying project delivery, maintenance, and long-term asset management.

To support its expanding European operations, LONGi also announced plans to establish 15 local Service Centers of Excellence (CoEs) across major European markets by the end of 2028 under its “2815 Plan.” The centers will provide localized engineering, commissioning, spare parts, and technical support for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
