There Is No Energy Security Without Investing in Renewables: Rishi Sunak

“There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables,” Sunak posted on Twitter.

Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, said that he will attend the COP27 summit next week in Egypt. This is a reverse of a widely criticised decision to forgo the annual climate gathering in order to focus on urgent economic issues at home.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister earlier stated that participation in climate negotiations would depend on progress made on a national budget statement, due on Nov. 17.

Sunak said that he was there to “deliver upon Glasgow’s legacy, building a secure future”, a reference to the agreement reached at the last year’s summit in Britain. This deal was intended to preserve the chance for the world to avoid the worst effects of global warming.

“That is why I will attend @COP27P next week: to deliver on Glasgow’s legacy of building a secure and sustainable future”, he twitted.

After his office stated last week that he wasn’t expected to attend the 27th session at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, Sunak was criticized by climate activists, opposition politicians, and even members of his own party.
