Sungrow, a leading global supplier of inverters and energy storage system solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in New York City (NYC). The company has received the highly sought-after TM-2 approval and Certificate of Approval (COA) for its PowerTitan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This approval is crucial for interconnecting energy storage systems to the local grid in NYC. Sungrow’s achievement positions them well to offer sustainable energy solutions to businesses in the city, aligning with NYC’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to clean energy sources.
Before a BESS can be used in an NYC project, it must comply with the fire safety requirements outlined by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). The approval process involves rigorous laboratory testing and certifications to ensure the system’s ability to prevent thermal runaway fires, which are difficult to extinguish and prone to reignition. Manufacturers seeking certification must submit the TM-2 form for review by the FDNY, either directly or through an authorized representative.
The COA from the FDNY serves as a crucial entry point into the NYC market and acts as an initial gateway for approvals of energy storage products. Sungrow is now among a select few companies that have obtained this certification. The company’s liquid cooled ESS PowerTitan, which is UL9540 and UL9540A certified, exhibits excellent safety features such as fire and gas detection systems, explosion mitigation, battery management system, internal dry-pipe system, and other proposed conditions.
Hank Wang, President of Sungrow Americas, expressed the company’s commitment to delivering safe and reliable energy storage solutions to customers in the US and worldwide. This achievement solidifies Sungrow’s position as a global leader in the energy storage industry. The PowerTitan’s liquid cooled thermal management system contributes to its extended lifespan, while the DC-DC controller enables individual charging and discharging of battery racks, enhancing system performance. Sungrow has already secured nine-gigawatt hours of orders for the PowerTitan globally, further highlighting its market appeal and demand.
