Vesconite Bearings Pioneers Solar Energy Adoption For Sustainable Manufacturing In South Africa

Vesconite Bearings, a leading manufacturing company, is making significant strides towards sustainability by initiating a comprehensive solar energy project at its Free State-based factory in South Africa. Led by Factory Manager Robin Crabb and CEO Dr Jean-Patrick Leger, the project involves substantial investments in solar infrastructure to reduce the factory’s reliance on the power grid and enhance its environmental impact.

As of mid-November, Phase I of the project is 80% complete, with the installation of steelwork to support 325 kVA of solar panels. Simultaneously, Phase II is underway, including the installation of an additional substation, generators, inverters, and an uninterrupted power supply system. Completion of Phases I and II is targeted for the end of 2023, with Phase III, aiming to double solar capacity, set to commence in late December.

Consideration is also given to a 1 MW battery system for energy storage during peak consumption times, aligning with Vesconite Bearings’ vision for a ‘lights-out’ facility operating 24/7. To enhance security, a 1.8 m electric fence is being installed around the solar system.

CEO Dr Jean-Patrick Leger expressed optimism, stating, “We aim to reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, cut costs, and significantly decrease our carbon footprint.” Vesconite Bearings is confident that these solar investments will fortify the company’s resilience against energy challenges, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. The company remains committed to achieving its environmental and operational objectives through innovation and responsible business practices.
