The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in India is actively working towards carbon neutrality and achieving net zero carbon emissions at airports across the country. The initiative involves standardizing the Carbon Accounting and Reporting framework for Indian airports. Airport operators with scheduled operations are advised to conduct a thorough assessment of carbon emissions at their respective airports and progressively strive towards carbon neutrality and net zero emissions.
Furthermore, the MoCA has encouraged developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports and respective State Governments to actively contribute to the goal of achieving Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero, emphasizing the use of green energy in the development process.
As a result of these efforts, notable airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have achieved Level 4+ and higher accreditation from the Airports International Council (ACI) for their carbon reduction initiatives, reaching the status of Carbon Neutral. Moreover, 66 Indian airports are now operating entirely on 100% green energy. This information was provided by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd), in response to a question in Rajya Sabha.
