SSE Renewables Expands Solar Portfolio in Poland with 400MW Acquisition

In a strategic move to bolster its solar photovoltaics (solar PV) portfolio in Northern Europe, SSE Renewables has acquired a 400MW portfolio of early-stage projects in Poland from developer IBC Solar. This acquisition follows last year’s purchase of approximately 500MW of early-stage solar PV projects in Poland from local developer Optisol. The combined portfolios elevate SSE Renewables’ prospective pipeline of solar PV projects in Poland to an impressive 900MW.

Under a Developer Services Agreement (DSA) with IBC Solar and Optisol, SSE Renewables will advance the development of this solar pipeline. The agreement involves a small upfront payment to the developers, with additional payments contingent on achieving key milestones in the development process. SSE Renewables has committed no significant capital expenditure until final investment decisions are made.

Richard Cave-Bigley, Director of Solar & Battery at SSE Renewables, expressed confidence in Poland as one of the fastest-growing solar markets in Europe. He sees the acquisitions as a means to develop the pipeline in collaboration with European partners, aligning with SSE Renewables’ commitment to investing in net-zero infrastructure. Cave-Bigley highlighted the importance of supporting partners IBC Solar and Optisol in delivering these projects and contributing to Poland’s ambitious decarbonization strategy.

Patrik Danz, CSO of IBC Solar, emphasized the potential of the Polish photovoltaic market for continuous growth in the coming years. He looks forward to a successful collaboration with SSE Renewables, recognizing it as a significant contribution to Poland’s energy transition.

Mateusz Tabaczka, CEO of Optisol, acknowledged the rapidly developing energy market in Poland and expressed anticipation for the collaboration with SSE Renewables in developing the 500MW Pomerania pipeline of solar PV projects.

SSE Renewables views solar PV as a complementary technology alongside wind in its European markets’ portfolio, foreseeing substantial growth potential in the coming decades. The company’s strategic expansion in Poland reflects its commitment to diversified and sustainable renewable energy solutions.
