In a significant development in the energy sector, Polaris Smart Metering, a leading provider of advanced smart metering solutions, has clinched two contracts valued at over ₹5,200 crore for implementing smart prepaid metering in Uttar Pradesh. The contracts, awarded by Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (MVVNL), entail the installation of over 5.1 million smart meters in crucial clusters including Lucknow and Ayodhya/Devipatan. Polaris aims to complete the installation within the next 27 months.
Under the terms of the agreement, Polaris Smart Metering will be responsible for supplying, commissioning, installing, and maintaining smart meters for consumers and system metering across the designated clusters for the next decade. These advanced smart meters will boast state-of-the-art technology, facilitating prepaid billing, real-time energy monitoring, accurate metering, and enhanced grid management capabilities. The agreement operates under a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Own-Transfer (DBFOOT) framework.
In addition to Uttar Pradesh, Polaris has also secured Letter of Awards (LOAs) from West Bengal and Manipur, totaling over ₹2400 crore. The company is set to install more than 2.3 million smart meters across these states.
The primary aim of these projects is to minimize losses for DISCOMs (Distribution Companies) and empower consumers by introducing smart prepaid meters, granting them greater control over their energy consumption. Through real-time access to energy usage data, consumers will be able to monitor and manage their consumption patterns efficiently, fostering a culture of energy conservation and responsible electricity usage. Moreover, consumers will enjoy the flexibility of recharging their meters at their convenience, eliminating the need for monthly visits from meter readers or manual bill payments.
Yashraj Khaitan, CEO of Polaris Smart Metering, expressed pride in securing these transformative projects, emphasizing the company’s commitment to digitizing and revolutionizing India’s electricity grid. He extended gratitude to MVVNL for recognizing the potential of innovative technology in reshaping grid management.
Shri Bhawani Singh Khangarot, Managing Director of MVVNL, hailed the strategic partnership with Polaris, asserting its alignment with their vision for reliable, efficient, and sustainable services. He emphasized the positive impact of smart metering technology on network efficiency and sustainability.
Polaris Smart Metering also addresses power theft through internationally patented algorithms, enabling DISCOMs to detect and tackle theft effectively. Additionally, the company’s technology facilitates advanced demand-response policies for optimal integration of renewable energy sources. Ensuring a high level of cybersecurity, Polaris encrypts its entire communication stack to safeguard data privacy.
Polaris Smart Metering remains committed to collaborating with state governments, utilities, and consumers to ensure successful implementation of the smart prepaid metering system. Prior to this, the company has secured multiple smart metering contracts across various regions in India.
Polaris Smart Metering’s initiatives mark a significant stride towards a smarter and more sustainable energy future for India, benefiting consumers, the environment, and the overall energy landscape of the country.
