In a significant development in the renewable energy sector, NHPC Limited conducted a competitive reverse auction for a 1500 MW capacity FDRE (Peak Power Supply) project on February 22, 2024. The auction, which ultimately focused on a 1400 MW capacity, attracted leading players in the renewable energy industry, showcasing the aggressive competition and strategic bidding that characterizes India’s push towards sustainable energy solutions.

The auction commenced with an opening L1 tariff of 4.55 INR/kWh, setting the stage for intense bidding among prominent renewable energy firms. BrightNight (BN Hybrid Power-1) emerged as one of the key winners, securing a 120 MW project at the opening tariff, underscoring the company’s competitive positioning and commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint.
Other notable awardees included Hero Solar Energy Private Limited and Blupine (Solarcraft Power India 20 Private Limited), both of which secured bids at slightly higher tariffs, reflecting the diverse strategies and capacities within the sector. The auction also saw a significant bid from ACME Cleantech Solutions, which initially bid for 750 MW but was ultimately awarded 680 MW at a tariff of 4.64 INR/kWh, marking the largest single award in the auction.
Despite the fervent competition, not all participants were successful in securing contracts. O2 Power (TEQ Green Power IX) and Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, despite their aggressive bids, did not secure any capacity, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the auction and the fine margins that can determine the outcome of such bids.
The reverse auction’s results, with final tariffs ranging from 4.55 to 4.64 INR/kWh, underscore the dynamic and competitive landscape of India’s renewable energy sector. This event not only reflects the companies’ strategies and market positioning but also illustrates the broader industry trends towards achieving cost efficiency and sustainability in power generation.
This auction is a testament to the robust growth and the competitive dynamics of the renewable energy market in India, signaling strong industry participation and investment in the country’s sustainable energy future. The diverse range of capacities and tariffs awarded in this auction highlights the sector’s evolving nature and the critical role of strategic bidding in shaping the renewable energy landscape.
