The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has introduced a groundbreaking proposal to address the complexities surrounding the classification of energy sources amidst the global transition towards renewable energy. As countries increasingly pivot away from fossil fuels towards cleaner alternatives, the need for a clear taxonomy to differentiate between renewable and non-renewable energy has become more pressing.

The proposal, unveiled by IRENA, aims to provide a comprehensive classification system that accurately categorizes various energy sources.   2. Carbon Accounting Framework: In alignment with the Paris Agreement’s international carbon accounting framework for energy, the proposed taxonomy allows countries to translate their domestic energy data into a common international measure of carbon emissions. This facilitates better tracking of carbon emissions and enables countries to monitor their progress towards climate goals.
  3. Addressing Existing Challenges: The proposal acknowledges the challenges faced in existing energy classifications, such as the lack of clarity on tracking certain energy options like off-grid technologies or specific forms of bioenergy. By introducing a more defined and comprehensive taxonomy, countries and analysts can better understand and assess different energy sub-sectors.
