XolarSurf Achieves Milestone with DNV Declaration of Conformity for Marine Solar Technology

The Declaration of Conformity confirms that XolarSurf’s design methodology complies with the general principles and requirements outlined in the DNV-ST-0119 standard. DNV’s rigorous independent research has identified and addressed potential errors, deficiencies, and weaknesses in analytical methods and tools, ensuring that factors such as wind, waves, and currents are properly considered in the development of the concept.

For Moss Maritime, the company behind XolarSurf, this independent validation of its design report not only reduces risks but also enhances its ability to attract the necessary investments to advance floating solar technology. Alexander Minge Thøgersen, Vice President of Engineering at Moss Maritime, expressed confidence in achieving their goal of having a prototype in the water by June, emphasizing the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of floating solar compared to floating wind turbines.

The global energy transition outlook highlighted by DNV underscores the immense growth of solar photovoltaics (PV) in recent years. With terrestrial growth reaching unprecedented levels, the challenge of land availability necessitates the exploration of alternative solutions such as floating solar. Despite facing rough sea conditions, floating solar offers benefits like reduced land footprint and potential co-location with existing wind farms, presenting attractive opportunities for energy infrastructure optimization.

Hans Kristian Danielsen, senior vice president of global business development and sales enablement at DNV, emphasized the importance of investing in floating solar energy, particularly in conjunction with offshore wind farms, for optimal area utilization and cost reduction through infrastructure sharing.
