Unilever Philippines is making significant strides towards sustainable climate action by integrating solar energy into its factory operations.
A recently finalized Memorandum of Understanding between Unilever Nutrition Cavite and Green Yellow entails a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to provide solar-powered electricity for factory operations. The goal is to fully install solar panels within one year.
The solar panels, with a capacity of 1,211 kilowatts, are expected to generate 1,847 megawatt-hours annually, supplying power to key factory buildings such as the Savoury factory, Dressings factory, and utilities building crucial for Unilever Nutrition operations in Cavite. This solar power initiative complements the factory’s existing use of renewable grid electricity through geothermal energy.
Reginaldo Ecclissato, Chief Business Operations and Supply Chain Officer expressed Unilever’s commitment to sustainable living and highlighted partnerships and technology investments as key drivers for operational efficiencies.
The signing event for the solar PPA was attended by government representatives and Unilever officials, underscoring the significance of the partnership.
This move aligns with Unilever’s strategic goal of achieving a 100% reduction in operational emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2030. Furthermore, adopting solar power is expected to yield significant cost savings that can be reinvested in enhancing operational efficiencies.
Arvind Sunderrajan, Head of Supply Chain for Nutrition SEA and Indonesia, emphasized Unilever’s transition to renewable energy sources, marking a significant step in its sustainability journey.
Through this agreement, rooftop solar panels will be installed and maintained to produce renewable electricity with zero greenhouse gas emissions. General Trias, Cavite Mayor Luis Ferrer, lauded Unilever’s commitment to renewable energy and its positive impact on the city.
