In a bid to fortify the country’s energy infrastructure and ensure grid stability, the Department of Energy (DOE) reveals plans for the introduction of 4,164.92 megawatts (MW) of power projects this year. Currently, 161.20 MW of these ventures are fully operational, while another 835.888 MW are undergoing testing and commissioning.
Comprising a blend of renewable and conventional sources, these projects encompass baseload, mid-merit, and peaking plants, with Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao set to benefit from the additional capacities. The rollout timeline indicates 1,224.655 MW to commence operations in the 2nd quarter, followed by 1,352.167 MW in the 3rd quarter, and 1,571.154 MW in the 4th quarter.
Highlighted among these ventures are the Mariveles Coal-Fired Power Plant and the Batangas Combined Cycle Power Plant, with solar capacities and battery energy storage systems also contributing to the grid’s reinforcement. Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla stresses the importance of expediting energy project development, urging local government units and concerned agencies to streamline permit issuance and right-of-way processes to accelerate progress.
President Ferdinand Maros Jr.’s administration celebrates the operationalization of 1,274 MW of installed capacity, alongside significant milestones such as the completion of the Mindanao Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP) and the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) Backbone Project, advancing the nation’s energy connectivity and resilience.
