Philippines: SM Supermalls Launches Massive Solar PV System At SM City Santa Rosa

SM Supermalls recently revealed its largest self-owned rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at SM City in Santa Rosa, Laguna, covering over two hectares of the mall’s rooftop. This milestone underscores SM Prime’s dedication to sustainability as it advances towards its Net-Zero Ambition by 2040.

The solar PV system at SM City Santa Rosa, certified by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), comprises 5,772 panels with a capacity of 3.088 MWp, generating up to 4.292GWh of solar energy annually. This installation will fulfill 15 percent of the mall’s energy needs.

SM Supermalls initiated solar PV installations in 2014 at SM City North EDSA, the Philippines’ first solar-powered mall. Subsequently, in 2016, SM Mall of Asia installed a solar power facility with double the capacity. By leveraging solar energy, SM Supermalls reduces reliance on the power grid, especially during periods of increased electricity demand due to higher temperatures.

As part of the Department of Energy’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP), SM Supermalls provides 110MV of power to communities nationwide. Fifty-six malls participate in this program, utilizing their generator sets during local power interruptions. SM Mall of Asia contributes the most, with a committed capacity of 15.92MW.

All 85 SM Supermalls prioritize energy efficiency, utilizing natural lighting through skylights and windows and transitioning to LED lighting since 2018. Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls, emphasized the commitment to sustainability, citing progress in clean energy, water conservation, and waste management. Through partnerships and community support, SM Supermalls aims to achieve its Net-Zero goals by 2040.
