The Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) successfully chaired the 15th ASEAN Energy Regulators Network (AERN) meeting, emphasizing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) as a critical agenda item. This initiative is central to achieving energy transition goals among ASEAN countries.

Malaysia’s role as the AERN Chair from 2024 to 2025 involves spearheading efforts to strengthen regional energy cooperation, develop frameworks for APG implementation, and discuss post-2025 plans under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC). The three-day meeting, held from May 28-30, 2024, also aimed to enhance collaboration with international organizations on energy-related projects and initiatives.

In addition to the AERN meeting, two workshops on Renewable Energy Regulation were conducted. These workshops focused on regulatory aspects of multilateral power trade and renewable energy integration within the region.

As Malaysia continues to lead regional efforts in renewable energy, the country is making significant strides domestically. Recent initiatives include launching ENEGEM for Cross-Border Green Electricity Sales. The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) invited eligible parties to participate in an inaugural auction for purchasing green electricity from Malaysia to Singapore via ENEGEM. The pilot auction started with 100 MW, targeting renewable energy bidders licensed for the Singapore Electricity Market. Successful bidders will enter an RE Supply Agreement with Single Buyer. Registration began on April 16, 2024, through PETRA or Single Buyer’s website, promoting regional energy cooperation and renewable energy development.

Additionally, Malaysia’s ongoing investments in both floating solar projects and biogas energy demonstrate its commitment to diversifying its renewable energy portfolio. These efforts not only align with national renewable energy goals but also support broader ASEAN energy transition objectives, positioning Malaysia as a key player in the regional energy landscape.
