A commercial rooftop solar project in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, has been successfully connected to the power grid and started generating clean electricity. The project uses high-efficiency photovoltaic modules supplied by Suntech and was developed in partnership with NexGen AI Capitals Sdn. Bhd., Suntech’s exclusive distributor in Malaysia.
The solar installation has been built on the roof of a commercial complex managed by the property management arm of Top Glove Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of medical gloves. The multi-purpose facility includes hotel facilities, offices, and other commercial operations. Installing the solar system on the existing rooftop enables the project to generate renewable energy without requiring additional land.
The rooftop system is expected to generate approximately 608,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually, equivalent to around 50,700 kWh per month. Most of the electricity will be consumed directly within the complex to support hotel operations, offices, and other commercial activities. This will reduce the facility’s dependence on conventional grid electricity while improving its overall energy efficiency.
The project is also expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. Based on Malaysia’s grid emission factor, the solar installation is estimated to avoid around 434.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The reduction will contribute to the property owner’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and decarbonization objectives while supporting long-term sustainability efforts.
The solar modules were selected to operate reliably under Southeast Asia’s hot and humid climate, which is characterized by high temperatures, strong sunlight, and significant moisture. The modules have obtained international certifications, including IEC, CE, TÜV, and ISO standards. These certifications support their quality, durability, and ability to maintain reliable electricity generation over their operating life.
The project highlights the growing role of commercial and industrial rooftops in Malaysia’s renewable energy transition. By utilizing existing building infrastructure, rooftop solar can provide businesses with cleaner electricity while reducing land requirements and electricity costs.
Suntech said it plans to expand its presence across Southeast Asia by providing customized solar solutions for commercial and industrial customers. Through its international project experience, manufacturing capabilities, supply chain, and partnerships with local companies, the company aims to support the development of more distributed solar projects across the region.
The Shah Alam installation demonstrates how commercial properties can integrate renewable energy into existing infrastructure while achieving both environmental and operational benefits.
