Mercadona, the leading supermarket and online sales company, has announced the start-up of an 8 MW photovoltaic installation for self-consumption at its Abrera logistics block in Barcelona. This installation, presented as the company’s largest solar plant, marks a significant milestone in Mercadona’s sustainable energy initiatives.

The installation comprises 16,500 solar panels with a generation capacity of 9.5 GWh per year, covering 25% of the annual energy demand of the logistics block. The project, which began in late 2023, was completed in May 2024, with a total investment exceeding 7 million euros.

Mercadonaโ€™s logistics block in Abrera spans 200,000 square meters, with over 110,000 square meters dedicated to built surface. The facility represents a 300 million euro investment, has the capacity to house 75,000 pallets of merchandise, and is equipped to serve 250 supermarkets.

Expanding Solar Capacity

The company, chaired by Juan Roig, has now reached a total of 100 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity across its chain, producing approximately 125 GWh of energy annually. This achievement is part of Mercadona’s sustainable energy plan initiated in 2020, which has seen an investment of over 75 million euros in approximately 200,000 solar modules. The installed solar capacity currently accounts for 6% of the energy consumed by the entire chain.

Mercadonaโ€™s objective is to reach 250 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity, which would provide a self-consumption capacity of 15% of the total energy consumed annually.

The company also reports that more than 400 of its over 1,660 supermarkets, along with eight logistics blocks, exclusive online sales warehouses (hives), and central offices in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia), are now equipped with solar panels on their roofs.
