Neoen Inaugurates 93 MWp Fox Coulee Solar Farm in Alberta, Expected to Generate 100 GWh Annually

Neoen , a global leader in renewable energy production, has announced the launch of its Fox Coulee solar farm in Starland County, Alberta. The plant, with a capacity of 93 MWp, began producing clean electricity in December 2023 and is expected to be fully operational in the coming weeks. Once operational, it will generate approximately 100 GWh of green electricity annually, enough to power around 20,000 homes and offset about 70,000 tons of CO2 per year. The solar farm is entirely owned by Neoen.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday, attended by Neoen’s Alberta team, Starland County Reeve Steven Wanstromm, and Neoen CEO Xavier Barbaro.

Neoen plans to sell a significant portion of the generated electricity and its environmental benefits through power purchase agreements, while the remainder will be sold on Alberta’s deregulated electricity market. This initiative aligns with Alberta’s and Canada’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.

In line with its Sustainability Framework, Neoen has commissioned local artist Frank Hadfield to create a sculpture of an Albertosaurus, a predator that once roamed the area, at the entrance of the photovoltaic plant.

Neoen, aiming to become a major renewable energy player in Canada, has bolstered its position with the Fox Coulee solar farm. Its Canadian portfolio also includes the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Grey Owl Storage project in Ontario, supported by a recently awarded 380 MW / 4-hour capacity contract. Neoen, established in Calgary in 2022, has expanded to Toronto and is actively developing numerous solar and storage projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, collaborating with local stakeholders and the farming community.
