The Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC), representing Haryana’s distribution licensees, filed a request to obtain approval for the procurement of up to 138.04 MW of power from the pool of Central Generating Stations (CGS) in the Northern Region. This request is based on the revised allocation issued by the Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC) on March 26, 2024. The power is needed to meet the rising demand during the summer season.
Previously, HPPC had submitted a similar request in 2023, which was granted. The revised allocation for 2024, as communicated by NRPC, is to be implemented from April 1, 2024. It includes a 10% share of power from the unallocated pool for Haryana, valid from May to September 2024. This allocation is expected to help Haryana manage the anticipated power shortage during the summer months when demand could peak at around 14,000 MW.
Haryana’s thermal plants are currently facing coal shortages, leading to difficulties in meeting the growing power demand. To address this, the Ministry of Power has extended its directive for the use of blended coal at imported coal-based plants, which has increased the cost of thermal power. HPPC has been purchasing power from the exchange at high costs, which is expected to rise further in the upcoming summer.
HPPC emphasized that without the allocated power from CGS, Haryana might face power shortages, leading to potential power cuts during peak demand periods. The Commission considered these concerns and granted approval for the requested 138.04 MW of power to ensure uninterrupted supply to Haryana’s consumers during the summer months.
This decision aims to support Haryana in maintaining a reliable and sufficient power supply, crucial for meeting the state’s growing energy needs. The order was signed and issued by the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission on August 12, 2024.
