How do you see the growth potential of the solar market in West Africa over the next few years?

Growatt

The solar market in West Africa is poised for significant growth in the coming years. The region has immense potential due to its high solar irradiance, growing energy demand, and increasing focus on sustainability. Governments in West Africa are becoming more supportive of renewable energy initiatives, and international organizations are providing funding for solar projects. We anticipate rapid expansion, especially in Nigeria, where energy deficits and rising population drive the need for reliable energy solutions. Jinko Solar is well-positioned to be a key player in this growth by providing efficient and affordable solar solutions.

What are some of the key challenges Jinko Solar faces in the West African market, and how are you addressing them?

One of the main challenges in West Africa is the high cost of financing solar projects, which affects affordability for both large-scale projects and residential users. Additionally, the region faces infrastructural issues, such as underdeveloped grid systems, that make the distribution of solar power challenging. Jinko Solar addresses these challenges by working with local partners to create financing mechanisms, such as equipment finance models, to make solar more accessible. We also focus on innovative solutions like PV + Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – off-grid and hybrid solutions – that don’t rely on conventional infrastructure.

How is Jinko Solar positioning itself to cater to both utility-scale projects and smaller, decentralized systems in West Africa?

Jinko Solar offers a diverse product portfolio that caters to the varying needs of the West African market. For utility-scale projects, we provide high-efficiency solar modules, such as our Tiger Neo HOT 3.0 PV modules and SunTera BESS solution which are designed to perform optimally in the region’s hot climate and provide grid stability. For smaller, decentralized systems, we focus on providing off-grid and microgrid solutions. These are essential for rural communities that are not connected to the national grid with our Tiger Neo HOT 3.0 PV modules and SunGiga BESS system. We work closely with local developers and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contractors to ensure that our products are adaptable to both large and small-scale projects.

Recently, Jinko Solar has been involved in several landmark projects in West Africa. In Nigeria, we are currently deploying a 2.0MW-4.8MWh SunTera BESS system using Jinko Solar’s all-black 425Wp Tiger Neo modules for the National Theatre in Lagos. We’ve also deployed a 16.8MWp for a rooftop installation in Ghana, the largest of its kind in Africa, utilizing our advanced Tiger Neo HOT 3.0 PV modules. These landmark projects demonstrate our commitment, ensuring that we contribute to increasing energy access across the region.

How do you see the role of solar energy in solving the region’s energy access challenges?

Solar energy plays a crucial role in addressing the energy access challenges in West Africa. With over 50% of the population in some areas lacking access to electricity, decentralized solar systems offer an immediate and sustainable solution. Solar technology allows communities to leapfrog traditional energy infrastructures, enabling faster and more affordable access to electricity. Jinko Solar is committed to driving this change by providing tailored solutions that are both scalable and cost-effective.
