Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and CEO of ADNOC, has urged for an annual investment of $1.5 trillion in the energy sector to address the increasing energy demands fueled by technological advancements and population growth. His remarks came during the opening ceremony of the 40th Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference.
Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the projected global population increase of 1.7 billion by 2050, primarily in the Global South, which necessitates a significant transformation in energy systems. He stated that solar and wind energy production needs to expand seven-fold, while the demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected to rise by 65%. He also emphasized the continued importance of oil as both a fuel source and a foundational component in various products.
โArtificial intelligence is driving rapid changes in the energy sector, redefining productivity and efficiency,โ Dr. Al Jaber noted. He explained that generating a single image using AI can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone, highlighting the substantial energy requirements associated with modern technology.
The minister stressed that no single energy source will suffice to meet the rising demand sustainably. Instead, a collaborative and integrated approach is essential, utilizing a variety of energy sources, including renewables, nuclear energy, and LNG, to fully leverage the potential of AI and technological advancements.
Dr. Al Jaber also referenced a recent report by the International Energy Agency, which forecasts that electricity consumption related to data centers, cryptocurrencies, and AI could double by 2026. This surge in demand is projected to be equivalent to the total electricity consumption of a country like Japan, further underscoring the urgency for strategic investments in the energy sector to ensure sustainable and reliable energy solutions
