JERA Co., Inc., through its investment arm JERA Ventures, has recently put around 1 million euros into the tech company Granular Energy. Additionally, JERA’s subsidiary, JERA Cross, will start a pilot program using Granular Energy’s renewable energy tracking solutions, which allow precise hourly monitoring of renewable energy data. Granular Energy, co-founded by Dr. Toby Ferenczi, is a leader in advancing transparency in the energy industry, offering tools to help deliver carbon-free electricity on an hourly basis.
Their solutions not only align energy supply and demand on an hour-by-hour basis but also work with regional certification standards. Having an Interest in “hourly matching”, the idea of matching energy generation to usage each hour, has been gaining traction internationally, especially as part of feedback for updates to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. JERA is already pursuing projects to support widespread use of 24/7 carbon-free energy tracking and certification systems.
To move this initiative forward, JERA Cross will test Granular Energy’s hourly renewable energy data management solutions, following the guidelines set by EnergyTag. By accurately tracking the source and timing of energy generation every hour, and aligning with existing certification standards, JERA Cross clients will gain real-time insights into their energy usage. This approach aims to increase transparency around clients’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions, supporting their shift toward greener practices.
