South Korea Launches K-Grid Export Alliance, Targets $15 Billion in Energy Exports by 2030

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of the Republic of Korea has officially launched the public-private K-Grid Export Alliance, aiming to penetrate global grid markets and expand the country’s presence in the growing demand for energy infrastructure. This initiative comes as nations push toward carbon neutrality and face rising power demands driven by high-tech industries like AI, leading to a surge in the need for new grid systems and the replacement of aging infrastructure.

The K-Grid Export Alliance is designed to promote exports across the entire electrical power industry value chain, including power generation, transmission, distribution, and ancillary services. The initiative will operate under the national brand “Team Korea,” uniting public power companies, EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) specialized firms, and grid businesses to leverage the strengths of both public and private sectors.

Public power companies and major corporations will take a leading role in the Alliance as key buyers and developers of materials and equipment, while EPC firms will focus on utilizing domestically produced materials. Supporting the alliance’s efforts, the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI), Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-SURE), and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) will provide assistance in areas such as test certification, financing, and marketing overseas. Leading law firms will also assist in addressing legal challenges related to international market entry.

During the 32nd Energy Commission meeting held after the announcement, MOTIE Minister Dukgeun Ahn presented 13 project tasks aligned with the K-grid global expansion strategy. Minister Ahn emphasized the ministry’s commitment to achieving a goal of USD 15 billion in grid exports and capturing more than five percent of the global market by 2030.
