Dubai’s energy demand increased by 5.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
Al Tayer reported that energy consumption reached 59,594 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2024, up from 56,516 GWh in 2023. He attributed this growth to Dubai’s expanding population and the steady rise in economic activities across the Emirate.
To meet the growing demand, DEWA continues to enhance its transmission and distribution networks, ensuring world-class electricity and water infrastructure. “Thanks to the wise directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, the city has become a global destination for living, business, and tourism. Dubai’s urban, economic, and demographic prosperity fuels DEWA’s sustainable growth,” said Al Tayer.
DEWA’s total installed generation capacity has reached 17.179 gigawatts (GW), with clean energy accounting for 20% of the total capacity. This aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to achieve 100% clean energy production by 2050.
The utility provider also recorded a 3.4% increase in peak demand, reaching 10.76 GW in 2024. The steady rise in consumption underscores Dubai’s continued economic expansion and the increasing need for sustainable energy solutions.
