TotalEnergies Partners with RWE to Supply 30,000 Tons of Green Hydrogen to German Leuna Refinery

As part of its 2030 goal to decarbonize hydrogen usage in its European refineries, TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with German developer RWE to supply 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to the Leuna refinery in Germany. This agreement will span 15 years, starting in 2030.

The green hydrogen will be produced by a 300 MW electrolyzer, which RWE will build and operate in Lingen. Local storage will be provided for the hydrogen, and it will be transported via a 600 km pipeline to the refinery. The move is expected to reduce the refinery’s CO2 emissions by approximately 300,000 tons annually, starting in 2030. This marks the largest green hydrogen supply ever contracted from an electrolyzer in Germany. “We are looking forward to developing further our partnership with RWE, our partner in several offshore wind projects in Germany and the Netherlands. This long-term contract for green hydrogen marks an important milestone to reducing our CO₂ emissions at our Leuna refinery. It will be made possible thanks to the completion of the H₂ backbone by German authorities and their efficient support to green H₂ customers like our Leuna refinery,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
