SANY Launches 10 MW Solar Power Project in Zimbabwe, Expands Renewable Push in Africa

Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer SANY has officially commenced construction of a 10 MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Zimbabwe, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion across Africa. The project, being developed by a Chinese mining company, represents SANY’s first solar project in Zimbabwe and the first in Africa to adopt its innovative “EP+F” business model, which integrates engineering, procurement, and financing into a comprehensive solution for customers.

The plant will feature SANY’s self-developed 710 high-efficiency PV modules, combined with advanced inverters and high-strength mounting structures. Once connected to the grid by the end of 2025, the installation is expected to generate 18 million kWh annually, easing Zimbabwe’s persistent power shortages and providing reliable electricity for local industries and communities.

The “EP+F” (Engineering, Procurement + Financing) model is designed to reduce financial barriers for energy developers in emerging markets. According to SANY, this flexible and replicable approach makes clean energy adoption more accessible and attractive, particularly in regions where upfront investment challenges hinder energy transition efforts. The project’s client has also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with SANY into other sectors, including microgrids, electric trucks (e-trucks), and EV charging infrastructure.

This initiative follows the success of SANY’s Mining Microgrid Power Project in Zambia, which was connected to the grid at the end of 2024. The Zambia project, described as Africa’s largest single-unit “solar + storage + diesel” hybrid system, was completed in just four months. Its first phase now generates approximately 16 million kWh annually, reducing customer electricity costs by over RMB 20 million and accounting for nearly 30% of production expenses. Building on that momentum, SANY has signed three additional microgrid projects in Zambia, reinforcing its commitment to Africa’s clean energy transformation.

SANY’s presence in Africa spans over 23 years, evolving from equipment trade to long-term partnerships focused on sustainability and development. The company currently operates 15 subsidiaries across over 30 African countries, supported by a network of 13 dealers. Its machinery and technologies are now active in more than 50 countries and regions across the continent.

SANY’s contribution also extends to local employment and capacity building, with over 50% of its African workforce locally hired, creating more than 5,000 jobs. The company says it plans to continue leveraging its technological expertise and operational experience to build a resilient local supply chain and support Africa’s green energy and economic growth.
