The Government of Indiaโ€™s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy recently provided an update in the Lok Sabha regarding rooftop solar installations in Andhra Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY). The discussion followed an Unstarred Question raised by Shri Balashowry Vallabhaneni, which sought details about the stateโ€™s request for rooftop solar capacity, the expediting of proposals from distribution companies, and the current status of these proposals.

In response, the Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, confirmed that the Government of Andhra Pradesh had requested an allocation for three DISCOMs. The proposal included the installation of 7,77,142 rooftop solar systems, each with a capacity of 2 kW, under the Utility Led Aggregation (ULA) Model of the scheme.

Following this request and in accordance with the scheme guidelines, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy approved 3,88,571 rooftop solar systems under the ULA model for Andhra Pradesh. The state has now begun implementing the plan and has recently completed the tendering process for these installations.

This update reflects the active role of the central government in supporting Andhra Pradeshโ€™s efforts to increase domestic solar capacity through the PM-SGMBY. The scheme aims to provide households with rooftop solar systems at no cost, enabling residents to generate clean energy and reduce dependence on conventional electricity. By facilitating a significant allocation for the state and ensuring that the tendering process is completed, the central government has demonstrated its commitment to promoting renewable energy and supporting ambitious state-level initiatives.

With these steps, Andhra Pradesh is moving forward in its efforts to expand rooftop solar adoption, contributing to Indiaโ€™s broader renewable energy goals and helping households transition toward sustainable and cost-effective electricity solutions.

This development marks a key milestone in the ongoing implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana in the state.
