EBRD Provides €14 Million Loan To Farmalogist To Build Green Pharmaceutical Logistics Centre In Serbia, Backed By €1.2 Million GEF Funding

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is supporting the expansion of pharmaceutical logistics in Serbia through a €14 million loan to Farmalogist, a leading pharmaceutical distribution company operating across the Western Balkans. The financing will be used to build a new logistics centre in Serbia, helping the company strengthen its supply chain and improve service efficiency.

The loan package includes €1.2 million in concessional financing from the Global Environment Fund, highlighting the project’s strong focus on environmental sustainability. A significant share of the financing, around 79 per cent, is aligned with the EBRD’s Green Economy Transition principles, underlining its contribution to greener and more efficient operations.

The funding will be used for the construction of the new logistics facility as well as the purchase of modern equipment. By centralising operations and introducing automated warehousing and handling systems, the project is expected to significantly increase Farmalogist’s operational capacity and improve overall efficiency.

The new logistics centre has been designed with a strong environmental focus. It is expected to achieve an energy performance level that exceeds national requirements by one certification grade. The facility will also incorporate circular economy practices aimed at reducing its environmental impact, while rooftop solar panels will be installed to improve energy efficiency and support the use of renewable energy.

This financing represents one of the first projects in Serbia to include a dedicated Circular Economy Regional Initiative component combined with concessional funding. Through this initiative, Farmalogist will further integrate circular economy principles into its operations. Planned measures include optimising packaging, reducing waste, increasing the use of renewable energy, and implementing automated recycling processes, all of which will help minimise the environmental footprint of the new logistics centre.
