Morocco has taken another major step in expanding its renewable energy capacity with the launch of the Noor Atlas solar programme. The initiative is being led by Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) and aims to develop multiple solar power plants across the country with a combined capacity of around 305 megawatts (MW). The programme forms part of Moroccoโs broader national strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen its clean energy mix.
The Noor Atlas programme will include several solar photovoltaic (PV) plants located in different regions of the country. Key project sites include Outat El Haj, Enjil, and Boudnib. By distributing the solar installations across multiple locations, Morocco aims to increase electricity generation while also improving the stability and reliability of its national power grid. A geographically distributed renewable energy system helps ensure that electricity can reach various regions more efficiently and reduces the risk of power supply disruptions.
The solar programme is also expected to bring economic benefits to local communities. During the construction phase, the projects will create a large number of job opportunities for local workers. Once operational, the plants will require skilled professionals for maintenance, technical management, and operational support. In addition, the development of these solar facilities is expected to strengthen local supply chains and encourage the growth of renewable energy expertise in the country.
Financial support for the Noor Atlas programme comes from a mix of national funding and international investments. This partnership demonstrates strong global interest in Moroccoโs renewable energy sector. It also reflects the confidence that international financial institutions have in the countryโs regulatory framework and long-term clean energy strategy. Over the past decade, Morocco has built a reputation as one of the leading renewable energy markets in the Middle East and North Africa.
The country is already known for hosting one of the worldโs largest solar power facilities, the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex. The success of earlier projects has helped Morocco attract global attention and investment in renewable energy infrastructure. The Noor Atlas programme further strengthens the countryโs leadership position in the regional solar energy market.
Morocco has set an ambitious target to generate more than 52 percent of its installed electricity capacity from renewable energy sources by 2030. Expanding solar power capacity will play an important role in achieving this goal. By increasing the share of clean energy in its power system, Morocco is working to reduce carbon emissions and limit the environmental impact of traditional fossil fuel generation.
As the Noor Atlas solar plants gradually begin operations, they will contribute clean electricity to homes, businesses, and industries across the country. The programme represents another important milestone in Moroccoโs long-term transition toward a sustainable and low-carbon energy future.
