The Rockefeller Foundation has announced a new investment of $10 million to support the development of clean energy projects across Africa. The funding aims to accelerate renewable energy initiatives that often face delays or fail to move beyond the planning stage due to financial and technical challenges.
Africa has strong potential for renewable energy, particularly solar, wind, and hydropower. However, many countries across the continent still struggle with limited electricity access. Millions of people live without reliable power, which affects economic development and basic services such as healthcare and education. A major portion of the funding will support the work of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). The alliance focuses on expanding clean energy access in developing regions while supporting climate goals. Through this partnership, the investment is expected to attract additional private-sector financing. Investors often hesitate to fund energy projects in emerging markets due to perceived risks related to regulation, financing, and project implementation. The Rockefeller Foundation’s funding will help reduce these risks and make projects more attractive to commercial banks and international investors.
One of the key challenges in renewable energy development is securing funding for early-stage project activities.
